With Spring almost here, I decided to bring the grill out of the garage and clean it up. As soon as it is warm enough to be outside without a jacket, I will be using the grill to cook dinner. I love food cooked on the grill – it adds a special flavor to the meats that you just can’t duplicate on the stove or in the oven. I also like to use marinades on the meats if i am going to be grilling. So I will have a much larger variety of flavors for all the different meats very soon.

Sadly, the earthquake happened about 3:30 in the morning, so obviously most people were sound asleep by then. This is too soon to know how many injuries and fatalities are the result. I hope that the numbers are low and that we can send humanitarian help right away.

This morning I was walking in a parking lot to my car and I saw a penny on the pavement near my car. It was a shiny penny, with the “tails” side up. As I bent down to pick it up (A penny saved is a penny earned!) I was remembering that a long time ago a friend told me that if you pick up a penny that is “tails up” it brings you bad luck, but if it is “heads up” then it means good luck. I wonder where that superstition originated? As for me, I think that any change found and picked up from the ground is good luck!

So a lot of people go all out and have huge weekend parties or last ditch getaway weekends to the ocean beaches, the Bay, the rivers or even lakes. It’s all about getting to a large body of water and swimming, boating, and fishing.

Friends of mine have a little cabin on the river about 150 miles south of here. They were nice enough to invite me and a couple of our friends to come down on Labor Day weekends and camp out. I’m thinking about it!

My brother has ADHD. Because of this he sometimes needs a little bit of extra help in college. Help in the way of being given extra time to complete assignments. Unfortunately, the college he is now going to won’t let him have extra time to complete assignments. Because of this he has run into a snag that is preventing him from graduating with his bachelor’s degree. He needs to get a “C” in a particular class. His professor was a hard-nose who would not give him any time extensions on his assignments, and he needed an extension. Because he could not get the extension, he received a “D” in the class, so he can’t graduate unless he takes the entire class over again, which would cost him an extra $1,000.00.

He really needs this degree to get the job that he wants. He has tried everything possible to get the grade changed to an “Incomplete” and get the assignment turned in, but the college won’t allow it. He has gone all the way to the top administrator, and even though they admit that they “could” change the “D” to an “I” and then let him turn in the assignment and get that “C” that they simply don’t want to do it. During the last meeting they went so far as to encourage him to stop pursuing his degree, claiming that he doesn’t need that degree to get the job that he wants. I find this to be an outrageous claim because he tried to get “that job” and was told repeatedly during his job seeking interview that he DOES need that degree. When he signed up for the courses at the college, they also told him that he “needs” this degree. And now that he is only ONE assignment away from getting that hard earned degree, they are refusing to let him turn in the assignment and telling him (after thousands of dollars spent and many hours spent pursuing the degree that he has been repeatedly told he needs and telling him he doesn’t really “need” that degree and he should just go get a job!

What a tremendous disappointment, and what a huge ripoff! And yes, he will end up taking that course over again, but NOT with that same professor. It would be a huge disservice to himself and our parents to stop one class short of his hard earned degree. From this point on, however, if and when anyone asks me about my opinion of that college, they will get an earful!

I am really happy to hear when someone displays that they have a sense of humor! In this day of doom and gloom, we need to laugh at ourselves from time to time. And for that reason, I was drawn to watch, and share with you, Joe Jonas (from the Jonas Brothers) rendition of Beyonce’s “Single Ladies.” I have to admit I’ve never even heard a Jonas Brother song (that I’m aware of) but Joe Jonas has my kudos for doing this video. I heard that it was done because he lost a bet, but whatever the reason, good for him!

I think someone has dumped an unwanted dog by the road near where we live. I have seen this strange stray dog wandering around the neighborhood for about the past week. I’ve checked with all of my neighbors, and they say they’ve seen it too, but don’t know who it belongs to. I’ve checked the animal shelter for reports of a missing dog, and looked around for “lost” posters, and they have no reports at all of the dog being reported as missing, so I really think that they dog was abandoned. The dog is a very good looking dog, I have to expect that perhaps there were some kind of behavior issues that resulted in it being dumped. I’m going to try to get the dog’s trust and see if I can coax it to come to me at some point so it doesn’t get into trouble. I know one of my neighbors raises chickens and they said if they catch the dog in their chicken yard they will shoot it, and I really don’t want that to happen!
