Iraq executed children?

I read on the news today from Amnesty International’s website that Iran has announced that it will stop executing children. That kind of surprised me because I did not realize that Iran executed children the first place! The article continues to explain that this may not apply to children who are convicted of murder, but that in most cases where a child has already been sentenced to execution their sentences will be commuted to life in prison instead.

I don’t know what other crimes a child would have/could have committed to get a death sentence other than murder! I have to say that the customs of other countries when it comes to legal issues sometimes really amaze me!

I was amazed at how many people came knocking at our door today to encourage us to go vote (of course for THEIR candidate) and how many people came knocking at our door, offering us a ride to the polls, and how many phone calls we got today with the same objectives in mind. I am so very glad that the polls are now closed and the door knocking and phone calls have stopped. I voted today, and I hope you did too! Now we wait to see who the winner is. I hope that the results will be met with good sportsmanship and dignity by the candidates and the voters alike.

Bail out bill didn’t pass

I’ve been watching with quite a bit of concern the attempts to fix the financial mess our country is finding itself in. I was not happy with the bail out bill package, but I felt that it needed to be passed to keep our economy from collapsing completely. So I was very discouraged to hear that it had not passed. This scares me; I’m concerned that people are going to be losing their jobs and their homes. I hope that they come up with a workable solution to fix this mess!

When will the “chicken littles” get over it?

Goodness knows I’m getting tired of hearing “the sky is falling” messages from people about how using cell phones is bad for you. For years people have been trying to link cell phone usage with brain cancer, and now they are trying to link it with decreased fertility in men? Good grief! Get over it already! If there is decreased fertility in men, where exactly are they holding their cell phones?

Is Kim Jong ill?

Apparently there have been rumors going around that North Korea’s extremist leader, Kim Jong is ill, and may have suffered a serious stroke. I’m not one to wish anyone harm, but considering how extremist he is and how he feels that the United States is “the enemy” I really can’t say that I’m sorry to hear that he may be suffering ill health. I can only hope that if he IS ill and/or dies, that he is replaced by someone a little bit less extreme!

I can’t believe that John McCain chose Sarah Palin to be his running mate! I have been hearing (and reading) about how UN-qualified she is to be the Vice President! I know that John McCain is trying to get the voters that wanted Hillary Clinton, but he is NOT getting my vote! I wanted Hillary Clinton, but SHE is qualified to be President. It has a lot more to do with qualifications than it does with gender! What kind of idiots does McCain think we are? I’m totally insulted!

“Nation of Whiners”

I was pleased to hear that Phil Gramm, John McCain’s advisor that was taped saying that the US has turned into a “Nation of whiners” has resigned from John McCain’s campaign. As soon as I heard the news showing the tape of him saying that I thought “that’s something the Democrats are going to have a real field day with!” I also thought that if John McCain is surrounding himself with advisors that think that way, and he is elected to the Presidency that we will be in a world of trouble! So, I was very glad to hear that he resigned!

I am so glad about the news that I’ve been watching about the successful rescue operation of those Columbian hostages! That seems to be the big headlines for the week, and for good reason! I was amazed to learn that some of those people have been hostages for YEARS! I didn’t realize that hostages ever lived that long; I thought that hostages were killed off pretty quickly!
What a great covert mission that rescue was, I am so happy for the hostages that were freed, and for their families! Great causes for celebrations, for sure!

Truce broken

Last week there was a cease fire started between Gaza strip militants and Israel. When I read about the truce, I thought “that’s not going to last very long!” Well, it sure seems that I was right, according to the news that truce was broken yesterday. I have to give credit to the world leaders that they keep trying to broker a peace in that area (this time it was Egypt) but I really feel that there are just too many fanatics out there to allow a peace to happen for very long. It really is a terrible shame that so many people are so invested in having the violence continue.

All the news media abuzz about Ted Kennedy’s health

I was very sorry to hear about the diagnosis for Ted Kennedy’s health over the past couple of days. His family has suffered so much loss and grief; it just doesn’t seem fair for so much of it to be heaped on one family! I just have to wonder sometimes if this is some kind of karmic justice against the entire family for ill-gotten wealth from the moonshine days of old. (The sins of the father shall be visited upon the son. I’ve heard that quote before, I think it is from the Bible, but don’t know exactly which chapter or verse. Sorry to disappoint all of you Bible-memorizing folks out there!)

Anyway, I am truly very sorry to hear about anyone having any kind of cancer nowadays. With all of the technological advances we have made in the past several decades, it seems to me that we should have found the cures for cancer, AIDS, Hepatitis, MS, and all the other horrible diseases that plague our existence. We have lost a few family members to cancer; it is not a pleasant journey. I wish Ted Kennedy and his family well.
