Happy Valentine’s Day

February 14th, 2012

Well, it’s here again. .  Of course, as we all know, Valentine’s Day is just a good marketing scheme for the greeting card companies and florists.   I usually do not receive anything for Valentine’s Day. I feel that there are more important things to spend our money on.  I see flowers on desks of different offices I go into and find myself wishing that I, too would get flowers, just once…..OR AT LEAST A CARD FOR CRYING OUT LOUD (hint, hint).

Sweepstakes and “free” gifts

February 12th, 2012

Last week I signed up, via the Internet, for the chance to win a free Subway card worth $100.00.  I didn’t think much more about it until today, when I received a telephone call from a woman who said that I had won the gift card and was entered into a sweepstakes for $100,000.00 cash, a cruise to the Caribbean or a trip to Australia.  It turns out that there was a catch (isn’t there always a catch?).

It turns out that they were a magazine clearing house.  I would also be getting a ladies diamond watch, and a subscription to four magazines for only $4.99 per week for five years.

I would have to pay for 33 months and get 27 months with no payments.  I got the student rate (because I was going to turn down the offer).  It is $39.31 per month for a 33 month period (this seems like a bit more than the $20 per month I was first quoted).   Now, this does not sound like a lot of money.  But, when you do the math, it adds up to $1,297.93 over a 33 month period.

So much for winning a “free” subway gift card or a free anything.

dreadful happenings

February 9th, 2012

We had a police shooting in town today.  This is something that is very rare in this relatively small town.  I have lived here for 9 years and have never heard of this happening before.  I even volunteer for the county Sheriff’s office and this has not ever happened.  It is a bit unnerving.

I have heard so many different versions of the story, that I don’t know what to believe.  I heard that it was the result of an altercation that began in the neighborhood that I live in and moved to the downtown area.  I also heard that there were two people in the vehicle when she was shot and that they were both  shot and killed.  I also heard that the female was dead and that a male in the vehicle with her was in the hospital.  According to the news reports, the driver was the only one in the vehicle.  It is strange how stories get turned around and twisted into something that is not even anywhere near the truth!!

The news reports say that it was a female, 54 years old, that was parked across from a school, watching the children.  Someone got nervous and called the police.  When she was asked to leave, there was an altercation of some kind with the police officer, she rolled up her window, drove away and was shot by the officer.  We will know more as time goes on I suppose.

Superbowl disappointment

February 7th, 2012

I was really rooting for the Patriots in this year’s Superbowl.  It was a great game, with very few penalty flags being thrown and the score was close for  almost the entire game.  Even the final score was close; 17 – 21.

If only they had caught that Hail Mary pass at the end of the game, I would be reveling in the satisfaction of my husband shampooing our carpets and  cleaning the house for a month.  But, alas, I did not win our “bet” and I will be doing my own cleaning (he always helps though).  But it would have been nice to have been able to sit back and not worry about the dusting, vacuuming  and dishes for a month.  Ahhh…it was just a dream.

Go Patriots!!!

February 1st, 2012

I am rooting for the Patriots in this year’s Superbowl.  I have made a bet with my husband.  If the Patriots win, he has to shampoo the carpets throughout the entire house and clean for one full month.  I deserve a vacation from the daily, mundane task of cleaning.  He has to do the dishes, vacuum the floors, mop and even clean the bathrooms for an entire month.

If the Giants win, I have to wait on him hand and foot for a month (like I don’t do that already!!).  The Patriots are favored this year.

GO PATRIOTS!!!
