When I first moved here I found that it was a really big challenge to figure out how to put all of my dishes, pots and pans, and food items into my new kitchen. One of the more interesting things about packing up and moving was the re-discovery of pots and pans and dishes that had been mis-placed over the years, and then because they had been mis-placed they had often been re-placed. Turned out that I had several duplicate items that I really didn’t need, but didn’t want to get rid of because I have convinced myself that one day my kids will be asking me to give them these types of things when they move out into their own places. I can remember how expensive it was to buy dishes, silverware, pots and pans, and all of those other items that kids just take for granted when they live with their parents.
One of the things that I wanted to do was to set up the kitchen in a way that made some kind of sense – store the dishes as close to the dishwasher as possible so that when unloading the dishwasher there was minimal effort in putting the clean dishes away. And things like spatulas, pancake turners, and big kitchen spoons would be stored near the stove, where they would be close at hand when cooking. Buying a variety of cabinet organizers really helped me to put all of the dishes above the dishwasher, and putting a sliding shelf under the kitchen sink really helped to maximize the usable storage space there!
