So, our state has this law. Driver’s are supposed to stop for pedestrians when they are in the crosswalk. This rarely happens. I can’t count the number of vehicles that drive right on past me when I am clearly standing in the crosswalk, trying to cross the street!
Just yesterday, as I was headed to lunch, I was standing on the corner of Main Street and 1st. I was about 4 steps out into the crosswalk and five vehicles passed right on by like they didn’t even see me. Most of them were on their cell phones (surprise) and not really paying any attention to what was going on around them.
So finally, I just threw my hands up at the next driver who started to blow past me and he stopped. I crossed the street, only to notice a town police officer sitting in his personal vehicle trying to get across Main Street at the same intersection. He saw everything that went on. I think that the police should monitor the downtown area more closely and start giving out tickets to those drivers who do not stop. I have been nearly struck twice now crossing at a main, lighted intersection in the middle of downtown, when I had the cross signal by vehicles that were turning left. The drivers never even looked to see if there was anyone crossing the street!
